Mitchell woman inducted into Honored Woman Educators of South Dakota
Elizabeth “Betty” Widman, Mitchell, was recently inducted into the Honored Women’s Educators of South Dakota in Mitchell.
HWE, formally known as the Annie D. Tallent Club, honors outstanding women teachers in South Dakota.
Widman earned her bachelor of science in home economics education from South Dakota State University.
She began her career as a home economics instructor in 1959 and retired in 2001. She taught in Mitchell Middle and High schools, Custer High School and General Beadle Campus High in Madison.
She has been a member and president of the South Dakota Association for Career & Technical Education, The American Association for Career & Technical Education, member and president of the South Dakota Association of Teachers of Family and Consumer Science, and member and president of the SDSU Alumni Association.
She has been active in 4-H on the county and state levels, cancer and heart fund drives, South Dakota Education Association and Jaycettes.
Awards she has received include the SDSU Distinguished Alumnus Award, SDSU Alumni Leadership/Service Award, SDVHETA Vocational Teacher of the Year and Arch of Fame, Outstanding Teacher of Mitchell Schools, SD Outstanding 4-H Alumni and SD FHA/Hero Master/ Adviser and Adviser/Mentor.
Although retired, she continues to be a strong advocate for S.D. Career and Technical Education.
