Mitchell tied for ninth after opening day
PIERRE -- The Kernels are on their way to accomplishing their goal set prior to the Class AA state girls golf tournament.
Mitchell, which wanted to finish in the top 10, is tied for ninth after the first day of state, which is at Hillsview Golf Course in Pierre. The Kernels tallied a 369 in the opening round and are tied with Class AA newcomer Harrisburg.
Sioux Falls O'Gorman carded a 307 and holds a 13-stroke lead over Pierre (320).
"We are very happy with how we played," Mitchell co-head coach Rob Marchand said. "The girls are looking back to where they could've done better, and hopefully, they'll take that and use it to their advantage."
The Kernels are three strokes from eighth-place Brandon Valley (666), six strokes from seventh-place Aberdeen Central (363) and nine strokes back from sixth-place Huron (360).
Pierre's Katie Bartlett leads the field with a 74. O'Gorman has three golfers in the top five, including Elle Carlson (75), Meredith Turner (76) and Jamie Benedict (77).
Mitchell's top finisher after Monday's round was Macy Miller, who is tied for 17th with an 84. Kylie Barington (90) sits in a tie for 33rd (90), Madison VanWalleghen (96) is tied for 54th, Taylor Volesky (99) finished tied for 64th, Allison Miller (100) is tied for 66th and Blair Overweg (112) rounded out the group in 89th.
Marchand said the course greens are big and challenging and his team looks to cut strokes in its short game.
"It's really easy to three putt or even four putt with the size of the greens," he said. "It happens to everybody, but if we can put ourselves in better position, we can hopefully get rid of some extra strokes."
Play continues at 9 a.m. today in Pierre.
