Mitchell teens recognized at Girls State
VERMILLION -- Two Mitchell girls were recognized during this year's South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.
Tatum Dean, of Mitchell, received the Travis Memorial Scholarship, and Haley Hinker, also of Mitchell, was chosen as the speaker of the House of Representatives during the 68th annual event, which concluded last week at the University of South Dakota with the traditional election of officers and presentation of awards.
Under Girls State Director Cheryl Hovorka, 370 girls who will enter their senior year of high school this fall participated. Participants were selected from across the state based on scholastic achievement, leadership skills and interest in government.
Katie Winckler, of Scotland, was elected state auditor. In non-political elections, Girls State delegates elected Tristan Roy, of Tabor, as one of six justices to serve on the Supreme Court.
Chesney Arend, of Emery, was named best defense attorney.
