Mitchell takes second, Herll fourth at invitational

BROOKINGS -- Quinci Herll finished fourth in the all-around to help lead the Mitchell High School gymnastics team to a second-place finish at the Patty Jorgensen Invitational Saturday in Brookings.

Mitchell had a team score of 137.05. Watertown claimed the team title with a 143.15, scoring nearly six points above the rest of the field. Madison took third with a 135.375, Brookings was fourth with a 134 and Huron finished in fifth with a 132.225.

Herll finished with a score of 35.1 and teammate Ellie Rew took sixth with a 34.775. Josie Dierks was 16th in the all-around with a 32.425 and Nicole Wittstruck took 18th with a 32.325.

Herll tied for third on bars with an 8.825, took sixth on floor with a 9.2 and seventh on vault with a 9.0. Rew competed a new bar routine and Mitchell head coach Audra Rew said she liked what she saw.

"She did a great job and is only going to improve her score with that routine," she said.

Mitchell's top finisher on the beam was Emily Prill, who scored an 8.5. The Kernels' best event was floor as the team tallied a team score of 35.5, but the team struggled on beam, recording a 31.825.

"Beam was shaky for us," said Rew, who had only 2 of 5 gymnasts hit their routines. "Not having a meet for a while gets you out of competition mode, and it can hurt you especially on beam because the nerves can creep back in."

The Kernels host Sioux Falls Roosevelt and Wagner in their senior night at 6:30 p.m. today in the Mitchell High School gymnasium.

"After Saturday, the girls are going to be willing to prove something on beam," Rew said. "I think they'll stay a little more focused, and they're looking forward to having a good meet at home and enjoying senior night."
