Mitchell student appointed to Marine Academy
WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., on Thursday announced that Alexis Blindauer, of Mitchell, has been appointed to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, N.Y.
Johnson nominated Blindauer for an appointment earlier this year.
"Academy appointments are an honor and go to best and brightest students in the nation," Johnson said. "Alexis has the leadership qualities and tireless work ethic that will enable her to succeed at the Merchant Marine Academy. I congratulate her on this honor and wish her the best of luck."
Blindauer is a senior at Mitchell High School and has won the Kiwanis Academic Award for the past three years. She is also active on the softball and dance teams. She volunteers at her church and has attended the Presentation Sisters Leadership Camp.
"The rigorous schedule that is expected of a student at the Academy is exactly what motivates me," Blindauer wrote in her application to Johnson. "After completion of my schooling I will use the skills which I learn to serve my country."
Johnson announced that the following students also received appointments to service academies: Scout Gambill, Hot Springs High School, United States Military Academy; Elizabeth Foy, O'Gorman High School, United States Military Academy; Daniel Kurtzahn, South Dakota State University, United States Military Academy.
