Mitchell struggles against Yankton
Luke Norden wants his players to have a short memory.
Tuesday during a Legion baseball game, Mitchell Post 18 struggled offensively and in the field, falling 13-6 to Yankton at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
Mitchell got out to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning but fielding errors and leaving runners on base led to the loss.
"We allow little things in the game to affect us way too much for a nine inning baseball game," Norden said. "We've got to do a better job at separating offense and defense and leaving that stuff in the dugout. We didn't do that tonight."
Mitchell starting pitcher Matt Larson, who suffered the loss, threw 100 pitches in four innings. Yankton scored nine runs, two unearned, including a six-run inning, with Larson at the mound.
"We need to get out of innings sooner and save pitches and our pitchers can go farther in the game," Norden said. "Matt threw way too many pitches and that wasn't on his shoulders."
Despite struggling on the mound, Larson rebounded offensively, going 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.
"He had a great night at the plate," Norden said. "That's awesome leadership from his standpoint. After pitching he wasn't ready to lay down. He continued to try to get something going offensively for us, which was great."
Post 18 (6-5) had 10 hits and had several players with a multiple-hit game. Spencer Neugebauer went 2-for-4 with a two-RBI triple and a run scored, while Michael Sadler went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Landon Neugebauer went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Norden said his team is very talented individually but players must find a way to leave mistakes behind and focus on the next play.
Post 18 gets a chance to bounce back today in a nine-inning game against Renner Post 307 at 5 p.m. in Renner.
