Mitchell soccer teams drop DH to Harrisburg
The Mitchell boys soccer team recorded its first goal of the season Tuesday thanks to Isaac Novak.
Novak's goal was unassisted for Mitchell, which fell 5-1 to Harrisburg at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.
"We made some changes this week after our first two games," Mitchell soccer coach Jason Wear said. "One change was moving Isaac up top. He pursued the ball and took it from the defense, and his shot went off the goalie's hands in the net. It was beautiful pressure and beautiful pressure and a great goal for Isaac."
Luke Novak was the Kernel MVP, Wear added. He had 15 saves in the game.
Harrisburg's goals came from Evan Kelly, Jackson White, Aaron Hanson and Tarek Nour, who had two.
Mitchell (0-3) hosts St. Thomas More at 4 p.m. Friday in Mitchell, followed by the girls game at 6 p.m. Friday is a tripleheader at the soccer fields as Mitchell Christian/Mount Vernon/Sanborn Central hosts Hot Springs at 8 p.m.
Kernel girls fall 2-0
Wear thought his girls soccer team played well Tuesday against Harrisburg, despite the 2-0 loss.
Mitchell held Harrisburg scoreless until the 82nd minute. Taylor Kelly scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers and Rowen Kilawee added the second goal with three minutes left in the contest.
"The girls have improved every single game," Wear said. "We made some changes with the girls and have focused on defense a little bit more."
Mitchell had five shots on goal, which all came in the first half.
Mitchell goalie Kristin Pistulka made 17 saves.
