Roughly 1,500 students appeared onstage over the course of the two days and about 4,000 people were on hand to see the some of the nation's best show choirs. Organizers said it was one of the highest attended performance events in the school's history.

Mitchell took the stage at 4:55 p.m. and was the last choir to perform in the preliminary round. Fourteen choirs were in the open class and only six of them advanced to the night time finals.

Mitchell, Waubonsie Valley High School of Aurora, Ill., Burbank High School of Los Angeles, Calif., Varsity Singers of Auburn, Ala., Expressions of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Omaha Westside, of Omaha, Neb., were the six choirs who scored high enough to move on to the evening finals on Saturday night. Mitchell was in third going into the finals and maintained that position after their emotional, energetic and inspiring finals performance.

"I talked with several of our singers and band personnel, and they all echoed the same thing: 'best performance ever!' I'm incredibly proud of how this group represented the strong tradition of show choir in Mitchell at arguably the toughest competition in the history of competitive show choir," said Chris Miller, who is in his seventh year directing show choir. "To be in the top 3 is absolutely amazing."

Miller says he couldn't do it alone. He credited choreographer Stephen Todd, assistant Anna Bartscher and parents who support FDC for their hard work.

The final competition of the 2014 season is at the Westwood Jubilation in Sloan, Iowa, on Saturday. After that, FDC hosts the Mitchell Show Choir Classic on March 22 and its annual dinner theatre on March 25, 27, 28 and 29. For ticket info, please contact the Corn Palace Box Office.
