Mitchell finished fourth as a team with 130 points, while Aberdeen Central took first with nine individual victories and 245.5 points.

“It was a good day for our kids, with seven in the finals,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said. “It’s exciting for the nine kids that get to go to state.”

Two Kernels took first place at the tournament, with Alex Herrick (152) and Tyson Sprinkel (195) each picking up individual titles. Herrick, a No. 2 seed at the Region, won a decision over Aberdeen Central’s Grayson Neuharth 8-4. Sprinkel topped Tyler Kleinsasser of Huron 5-3.

“It played out pretty similar to what we thought,” Carpenter said.

The Kernels picked up five second-place finishes, including Briggs Havlik (126), Landon Neugebauer (138), Ethan Parr (145), Matt Larson (160) and Chase Klingaman (220).

Other state qualifiers for the Kernels include Trey Hohn, who finished fourth in the 132-pound weight class, and Robert McCardle by taking third place at 285 pounds.

The Chamberlain Cubs finished fifth in the Region as a team with 32 points and qualified four wrestlers for state.

Nick Claussen placed the highest for the Cubs, taking third at 195 pounds by pinning Aberdeen Central’s Trevor Rau.

Chamberlain’s Collin Powell (106), Spencer Kirkpatrick (113) and Austin Cheney (220) each finished fourth in their weight classes to qualify for this weekend’s state tournament.
