The museum, which was founded in 1939, holds a vast collection of historic items, photographic and archival material, as well as nearly 300 original works of art, including the nation’s largest collection of works by South Dakota-born illustrator Charles Hargens and the second largest collection of work by Native American artist Oscar Howe.

The museum complex includes the six galleries of the Randall Building and four buildings within the Historic Village. The galleries of the Randall Building include the Middle Border History Gallery, the Charles Hargens Studio and Gallery, the Oscar Howe Art Gallery, the Case Dakota Gallery and the Terrace and Gates Changing Galleries. The Historic Village holds the 1886 Italianate Beckwith House, 1885 Territorial School, 1908 Country Church and 1914 Milwaukee Depot.
