Mitchell man pleads guilty to eighth DUI
A 41-year-old Mitchell man pleaded guilty Tuesday to his eighth drunken driving charge.
Shane Iron Heart, 41, has been arrested eight times for drunken driving in South Dakota since 1992.
Most recently, he was pulled over Sept. 14 in the 1200 block of North Main Street in Mitchell for driving with expired plates, and was arrested for drunken driving.
Iron Heart’s blood alcohol content was found to be 0.264. The legal limit for driving in South Dakota is 0.08.
Iron Heart is charged with aggravated drunken driving, which, under new regulations passed as part of the state’s recent criminal justice reforms known as Senate Bill 70, applies to anyone convicted of six or more DUIs within a 25-year period, according to Davison County Deputy State’s Attorney Bob O’Keefe. The charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine, and requires at least five years of supervision upon release.
Iron Heart is scheduled to be sentenced in November.
