Mitchell man arrested for hit-and-run
A Mitchell man was arrested for fleeing the scene of a crash Tuesday morning in Mitchell.
Andrew Engels, 19, was arrested for hit-and-run after damaging another man's vehicle and then fleeing the scene.
Engels was driving north on Lawler Street and stopped at a stop sign at the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Lawler Street.
Darrell Carr, 62, of Mitchell, was driving south on Lawler when he stopped at the same intersection. Carr made a right turn onto Seventh while Engels made a left turn at the same time onto Seventh.
Mitchell Officer R.J. Williams said Engels' vehicle struck the driver's side of Carr's vehicle, ripped the front bumper off and caused heavy front-end damage to both vehicles.
"Andrew drove away very fast," Williams said.
Law enforcement found Engels about an hour and 45 minutes later, and arrested him for hit-and-run, driving without a license and underage possession of alcohol.
When he was booked in the Davison County Jail, his preliminary breath test showed a 0.183 blood alcohol level. The legal driving limit is 0.08, but he was not arrested for drunken driving.
"We have no way of knowing what happened between the accident and when we found him," Williams said.
