Mitchell man accused of choking, striking ex-wife at apartment
A Mitchell man is accused of assaulting his ex-wife by hitting her face and choking her.
Corey Zobel, 25, is charged with domestic aggravated assault, which carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $30,000 fine.
He is also charged with violation of a protection order with assault, which carries a maximum of two years in prison and a $4,000 fine.
Zobel’s ex-wife reported to police that she and Zobel had an argument at her apartment, he struck her face twice and held her down on the couch with his hands around her throat. Police confirmed Zobel’s ex-wife had a valid protection order restraining Zobel from contact with her.
According to court documents, a police officer observed bruising under Zobel’s ex-wife’s eye, swelling on her right cheek and light red marks on both sides of her throat.
Zobel admitted in an interview that he knew of the protection order, but that he’d been living with his ex-wife for three weeks. He also admitted he struck and choked her, court documents say.
