Mitchell English teacher named state's best
A Mitchell teacher, Teresa Berndt, has been named the South Dakota Language Arts Teacher of the Year.
Berndt teaches 10th grade English, 11th grade English honors, encounters with literature and technical writing at Mitchell High School. In other school years and other locations, she has also taught subjects such as drama, novels, Shakespeare, creative writing, newspaper and one-act play.
Berndt is known in the classroom for making a difference to the students she teaches, said a news release from the South Dakota Council of Teachers of English. Writing is a tool she uses in her classroom to make connections to real-life situations and to connect with her students.
“I am blessed that my content allows constant connections to real-life situations and hopefully life-long lessons at the same time,” she said in the release.
Berndt has been teaching English for 20 years.
The award was presented during the annual South Dakota Council of Teachers of English conference Friday and Saturday at Cedar Shore Resort in Oacoma. Fifty-four teachers from area middle schools, high schools and post-secondary institutions participated.
