Freshman defender Kayla Weitzman scored the lone goal for the Mitchell girls’ soccer team, but it was not enough as the Kernels fell 2-1 to Tea Area Tuesday at the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex in Mitchell.

Neither the Kernels nor the Titans could put one in the back of the net in the first half of the game. But Tea scored first on a goal with 29 minutes left in the second half, which was just past the grasp of Mitchell goalkeeper Kristin Pistulka. The Titans scored again with 13 minutes to go in the second half to make it a 2-0 game.

“We got beat by their effort,” Mitchell coach Kayla Braffet said. “We had our chances, but we need to capitalize. Defensively, we were pretty good, but we needed to make some changes because we got scored on.”

With four minutes left in the game, Weitzman netted the first goal of the season for the Kernels. Weitzman’s goal gave the Kernels a chance to get back in the game, but it was too little too late.

“I thought we played great toward the end of the second half,” Braffet said. “We just need that effort from the second half for the entire game. We can’t expect to win when we only play hard for 28 minutes. We have to play a whole game, but I was really happy we didn’t give up.

“Tea was a good team and hopefully we can improve.”

Mitchell (0-1-1) travels to play St. Thomas More at 5 p.m. Central time Friday in Rapid City.
