Mitchell drops final regular season game
HURON -- Mitchell Post 18 finished its regular season with a loss Friday, falling to Huron 6-4.
Post 18 (24-15) struggled offensively, recording just three hits during the game.
"We had a lot of lazy fly balls," Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. "We were out in front and had 14 flyouts in the game."
Mitchell was led by Derek Miller, who had a two-RBI single and a double, and Jed Schmidt, who added an RBI single.
Post 18 got on the board in the first inning after getting help from Huron's defense. Huron gave up a walk and an error in the inning, which resulted in a run on an RBI groundout. Mitchell scored three more runs in the fifth with the help of Schmidt and Miller.
Norden sent four pitchers to the mound in Friday's game, including Landon Neugebauer, Ben Miller, Kanin Nelson and Dylanger Pierson.
"We're trying to get a lot of guys some innings and not throw any one guy too much," said Norden, whose team begins the Region 2A tournament Tuesday. "We played really good defense tonight."
Neugebauer took the loss, giving up four runs on three hits in one inning. Miller threw the next three innings, giving up two runs, one earned, on two hits. Nelson threw three scoreless innings and didn't give up a hit, while Pierson threw the final inning for Mitchell.
At Tuesday's region tournament, Post 18 is the fourth seed with a 4-4 region record. Mitchell faces fifth-seeded Sioux Falls East at 1 p.m. in Yankton.
