Mitchell Christian joins Mike Miller Classic field
For the first time this year, two Mitchell teams will compete in the fourth annual Mike Miller Classic on Dec. 27-28 at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.
Tournament officials released the schedule to the Argus Leader, which printed in its Wednesday edition.
The Mitchell High School boys' basketball team has continually made its presence in the Corn Palace event, but the Mitchell Christian boys' team is set to join in with some of South Dakota's best teams, along with several of the nation's top high school programs.
"It's only going to add excitement to the Mike Miller Classic and to the community," said first-year Mitchell Kernel boys' coach Erik Skoglund, whose team will face La Lumiere (Ind.) and Sioux Falls O'Gorman in this year's event. "It will bring a lot of fans into the Corn Palace with the Kernels and Mitchell Christian playing."
Other South Dakota teams in the event are O'Gorman, Sioux Falls Washington, Sioux Falls Lincoln and Sioux Falls Roosevelt. Out of state teams that will make the trip are La Lumiere, Patrick Henry (Minn.), DeLaSalle (Minn.), West Oaks Academy (Fla.), Flora Macdonald (N.C) and a top prep basketball program Findlay Prep (Nev.).
Golden Eagle head coach Dennis Martin said his team is excited about the opportunity to join the talented field.
"It's a great opportunity for our players to participate in this event," Martin said. "Anytime you have local teams playing in the Corn Palace, it's a win-win for the community and for the schools. We're glad to be a part of it."
Findlay Prep displayed its talent in 2010 and 2011 and returns after missing last year. Two of Findlay Prep's top players are shooting guard Rashad Vaughn and small forward Kelly Oubre. Vaughn, of Golden Valley, Minn., has offers from Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, North Carolina, Georgetown, Connecticut and Minnesota, and that's just to name a few. Oubre, of Fort Bend, Texas, has offers from several schools, including Connecticut, Georgetown, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisville and Florida.
Findlay Prep, which is based out of Las Vegas and was ranked No. 3 in the country after last season, is matched up against Reid Travis and DeLaSalle.
Power forward Travis, who has a handful of offers that include UCLA, Gonzaga, Duke, Minnesota, Michigan State and Stanford, showcased why he's a top recruit last year. The 6-8 senior averaged 34.5 points in two games, leading his team to two victories.
DeLaSalle will also play the Washington Warriors on the opening day of the event.
