Mitchell's Mary Krause was the top Kernel finisher in 28th place. Krause finished with a time of 16 minutes, 3.47 seconds, which was one second faster than her time at last year's state meet.

Munsen said Krause endured some struggles during the state race.

"Mary got knocked down and stepped on still and finished in the top 30," Munsen said. "You've really got to commend her for that but it was a disappointing day because none of our girls had a good race."

Senior Berkley Rietveld was Mitchell's second finisher. She took 51st with a time of 16:51.47 and said she had no regrets about the race.

"I gave it all I had and there was nothing left in the tank when I finished," Rietveld said. "I felt like I did pretty well, considering Huron's a hard course."

Freshman Naomi Munsen finished in 70th place (17:17.92), senior Courtney Moore finished in 92nd place (18:32.92) and sophomore Ellie Rew finished in 101st place (20:13.92). Sophomore Kaitlyn Jacobson finished in 102nd place (20:22.67) and junior Sakura Higa finished in 103rd place (22:43.27).

Rapid City Central won the girls' team title and Sioux Falls Washington was the runner-up. Yankton's Savannah Woods won the girls' race in 14:40.47.

On the boys' side, Sioux Falls Lincoln won the team title with five runners finishing in the top 15. Sioux Falls Roosevelt took second and Brookings finished in third. Brookings' Addison DeHaven won the boys' 5,000-meter race in 15:53.80.

Freshman Caleb Larson led the Kernels in 80th place (19:09.40).

Scott Munsen said Larson, who played soccer this fall, had a good season for starting Oct. 1.

"It was a great run for him and he had a fine season," he said. "If we can develop some more kids with that attitude of competing, we'll improve."

After Larson, eighth-grader Josh Loecker finished in 95th place (20:18.65), freshman Riley Cowins finished in 102nd place (20:55.40), junior Martin Simonsen finished in 104th place (22:14.50) and eighth-grader Rusty Munsen finished in 105th place (22:53.00).

"When you're struggling as much as we are now, there's no place to go but up," Scott Munsen said.
