HURON — To have a chance to beat the top-ranked Huron Tigers, the Mitchell Kernel boys’ squad needed a perfect game.

For one quarter, Mitchell played that perfect game, but Huron’s size was too much for the Kernels to handle, as the Tigers defeated Mitchell 82-49 in Eastern South Dakota Conference play Tuesday.

Mitchell (1-17, 1-13 ESD) took an early 13-8 lead in the first quarter as Beau Brown hit two three-point shots and Connor Morgan added another.

The Kernels opened the lead to 17-10 with 2:41 left in the quarter, but Huron closed out the period with a 10-2 run.

The Tiger tandem of Justin Decker and Caleb Carr began to take the game over. The duo combined for 24 first-half points as Huron expanded the lead to 44-27 at intermission.

Brown’s 16 points led the Kernels at halftime.

“We had a nice quarter but nobody cares about eight minutes in a ballgame,” Mitchell coach Erik Skoglund said. “We came out and put up eight points in the second quarter and that’s when we had terrible weak-side action and couldn’t get anything at the rim. In the first half, we had them missing 11 3-point shots and they got offensive boards on 10 of them. They crashed the boards like madmen. I hope when we look on film it wasn’t a lack of effort but of execution.”

Huron (15-1, 11-1) outscored Mitchell 21-13 in the third quarter and a 65-40 lead going into the final stanza.

“That’s what a number-one team is supposed to look like here in South Dakota Class AA,” Skoglund said of Huron. “They had ultra-pressure from the guards and their big men manhandled us.”

Brown finished the night with 19 points and four assists to lead the Kernels, who were 20-of-54 for 37 percent from the field and 3-of-6 from the free-throw line. The Kernels turned the ball over 13 times.

“I thought we won it was on the offensive boards,” Tiger coach Tim Buddenhagen said. “We’d miss a shot and we’d have two or three guys right there that kept us in the game (early) until we could adjust defensively. “

Decker led Huron with 22 points and eight rebounds, followed by Carr with 17 points and nine rebounds. Hayden Busch chipped in with 12 points.

The Tigers were 34-of-60 for 57 percent from the floor and 11-of-18 for 61 percent from the free-throw line.

The Kernels return home to play Brandon Valley Thursday at the Corn Palace.
