YANKTON -- Mitchell Black opened the 13-14 VFW Majors state tournament with two wins Friday.

Mitchell topped Pierre 7-2 in the tournament opener early Friday morning and finished the first day of state with a 13-5 victory over the Rapid City Kings.

"The kids played awesome," Mitchell Black coach Dustin Wheeler said. "We played two very good teams, made routine plays and did all the big things and little things right.

"We had a tough schedule playing the first game. Our players left Mitchell at 5:15 a.m. and after our first game, we had to wait around to play again in the evening. To score 13 runs after sitting around all day, I couldn't be prouder of these kids."

In Mitchell's first game of the tournament against Pierre, it recorded seven runs on six hits and no errors. Pierre scored two runs on six hits and had two errors.

Carter Cavanaugh pitched seven innings for the win and struck out five. He reached base four times, had two hits and scored a run. Kiel Nelson had a hit and scored twice.

Against the Kings, Briggs Havlik got the win on the mound and Carson Max earned the save.

Nelson was 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single, Cavanaugh was 2-for-3 with two singles, a walk and a hit by pitch and Max was 3-for-6 with three singles.

Mitchell (38-11) advances to play at 10:30 a.m. today at Riverside Park in Yankton.
