The Mitchell Black teener baseball team fell to Brandon Valley 6-5 in the first game of the AA Majors Regional tournament Friday in Mitchell. Coach Dustin Wheeler said the team was hurt by a number of errors and will need to fix things defensively in order to win.
"We started slow and we had some mental breakdowns in the batter's box and on the base paths," Wheeler said. "We left a lot of runners on base."
Carter Cavanaugh took the loss for teener Black after coming in for starting pitcher Baley Miller. Carson Max went 4-for-4 with a triple and three singles and Drew Kitchens added three hits to lead Mitchell.
Wheeler said the team will need to make the routine plays easier moving forward in the tournament.
"When we eliminate our defensive errors, we're a pretty good team," Wheeler said. "We need to find a way to be aggressive in the batter's box and score more runs."
Mitchell Black (33-11) plays Sioux Falls East at 1 p.m. and Yankton at 6 p.m. today in Mitchell.
