Huron — The Mitchell spring high school baseball team had trouble throwing strikes in a doubleheader against Huron, dropping both games in five innings Wednesday.

The losses extended Mitchell’s losing streak to four and were the first two for the Kernels (6-5) on the road this season, as Huron showed patience at the plate for 11-1 and 13-3 wins.

“I can’t remember the last time we had this much trouble just throwing strikes,” Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. “We came out and just weren’t prepared.”

Jed Schmidt started the first game, going 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on three hits and two walks in the loss for Mitchell.

Matt Larson and Aaron Sudbeck each went 2-for-2, while Dylanger Pierson was 1-for-2 with a double. Tyler Houwman picked up Mitchell’s lone RBI on a sacrifice fly.

In the second game, Ben Miller took the loss, pitching 1 and 1/3 innings. He gave up five earned runs on two hits while walking six. Larson, Pierson and Landon Neugebauer each went 1-for-2 in the loss.

Huron had seven hits and walked four times in the second game, after 10 hits and three walks in the opener.

“I thought the best game we played was the loss to (Sioux Falls) Roosevelt in our last game and I thought that would carry over to tonight, but it just didn’t happen,” Norden said.

The Kernels, who are winless in three home games this season, play a doubleheader against Watertown at 6 p.m. Friday at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
