Mitchell baseball drops three of four
YANKTON — The Mitchell spring high school baseball team took one of four contests over the weekend, splitting two games in Yankton Sunday.
The Kernels (9-9) topped Rapid City Stevens 4-1 in their first game Sunday, with Aaron Sudbeck getting the win on the mound. Sudbeck pitched six innings, not allowing a run on two hits, while striking out three.
Sudbeck added two hits in the win, while Jacob Rice finished 2-for-3.
In a region matchup with Yankton in the second game Sunday, Mitchell fell 6-1. Starting pitcher Jed Schmidt took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits.
The Kernels finished with five hits and Derek Miller drove in the team’s lone run.
Against Brandon Valley Saturday at Drake Field in Mitchell, the Kernels scored four times in the sixth inning to take a 5-4 lead into the seventh. The Lynx tied the score in their final at bat before extra innings in the seventh and won in the game with a run in the ninth.
“We can’t seem to win the close games right now,” Mitchell coach Luke Norden said. “We could have three or four more wins this year if some things would’ve gone our way.”
Matt Larson started game against the Lynx, pitching five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and striking out four. Landon Neugebauer finished 3-for-3 with one run scored, while Dylanger Pierson recorded three RBIs.
In the second game Saturday against Pierre, the Governors scored seven times in the fourth inning to pull away from Mitchell. The Kernels were held to four hits in the loss, with Sudbeck and Schmidt each picking up an RBI.
The Kernels play a regional game against Sioux Falls O’Gorman at 6 p.m. today in Sioux Falls. The matchup was originally scheduled as a doubleheader, but one game will be played. Mitchell is 0-3 in regional contest this season.
