PIERRE, S.D. — Twenty emergency and domestic violence shelters in 15 South Dakota communities will find financial operations a little easier with the help of $513,761 in grant funding through the South Dakota Housing Development Authority (SDHDA).

The Emergency Solutions Grants (ESG) Program is a federal program through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, administered by SDHDA. ESG funding is awarded annually.

The Mitchell Area Safehouse received $55,524 in funds, and the Lake Andes Rural Office of Community Services was awarded $32,640 in ESG funds.

ESG funds can be used for renovation or rehabilitation of emergency housing shelters, shelter

operations, homeless prevention, rapid re-housing and administrative expenses.

Other 2014 shelter recipients are located in Aberdeen, Brookings, Custer, Huron, Lemmon, Madison, Mobridge, Pierre, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, Spearfish, Watertown and Yankton.

Since the ESG Program's inception 27 years ago, SDHDA has awarded approximately $7 million directly to shelters statewide.
