Missing Mitchell man safely returned home
An elderly Mitchell man was safely returned to his family Monday after mistakenly driving to Brookings County.
Mitchell Police Sgt. Dave Bientema said the 82-year-old man -- whose name he declined to release -- left home Monday around 7:15 a.m. to go to a doctor's appointment in town. However, he did not go to that appointment and the doctor's office called his family. The family searched for him, Bientema said, but could not locate him at his regular hangouts, and the man didn't have a cell phone with him. They called law enforcement around 9 a.m. to report him missing.
"He does have some memory issues," Bientema said. "We put out a statewide attempt to locate on his vehicle."
Only 13 minutes after the attempt to locate bulletin was issued, a Brookings County deputy sheriff located the man's car on Interstate 29 near mile marker 140, Bientema said.
"Arrangements were made with his family to have him escorted back to Mitchell," he said.
