Minivan rear-ends school bus
CORSICA — Trooper Matthew Petersen said there were no injuries to 12 Corsica students when their school bus was rear-ended by a minivan Tuesday afternoon.
The 3:55 p.m. accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and 273rd Street.
The bus, Peterson said, was headed west on 273rd Street and stopped at the intersection.
Carole Muckey, 70, of Harrison, was following the bus in her Chrysler Town and Country minivan.
As the bus slowed for the stop sign, Muckey’s purse fell off the passenger seat, Peterson said. Muckey took her eyes off the road momentarily, he said, as she leaned over to retrieve the purse and ran into the rear of the stopped bus.
There was minor damage to the bus, but Muckey’s van was totaled. The van’s air bags deployed and she was not injured.
Muckey was cited for careless driving.
The students, whose ages range from 5 to 12, were checked by Corsica Ambulance staff, released, and parents were notified. None was injured.
