MHS tennis team takes 7th at ESD

PIERRE — Flight 4 singles and Avery Larson was the consolation champion in Flight 6 singles in the Eastern South Dakota Conference tournament Monday in Pierre.

The tournament was originally scheduled for Thursday but was postponed until Monday.

Larson topped Brandon Valley’s Emily Konz 8-3 to win the consolation championship.

The Kernels finished seventh in the team race with 59 points. Aberdeen Central won the team title with 386 points and were followed by Brandon Valley with 299.

Mitchell Flight 4 singles player Sammy Pooley lost in the third-place match against Watertown’s Abbey Cerny 8-6, while Flight 5 Allison Buckley took fourth, falling to Huron’s Claire Hoogland 8-4 in the third-place match.

Flight 1 Grace Grabenstein, Flight 2 Tatum Dean went 0-2, while Flight 3 Haley Smith each went 1-2 in the tournament.

In doubles, Mitchell’s Flight 2 team of Smith and Buckley took fourth after losing to Watertown 8-2.

The Kernels are back in action Thursday in the state tournament in Sioux Falls.
