AVON — The Mitchell Christian girls’ basketball team battled back to beat Avon 56-51 on the road Tuesday.

Mitchell Christian’s Cassidy Graham led all scorers with 26 points, while Alexa Van Laecken chipped in with 11 points, nine assists and four steals.

The Golden Eagles also got nine points from Emily Reynen and eight points from Ashley Schmit.

“It was a hard-fought basketball game,” MCS girls basketball coach Jackie Van Laecken said. “The girls just wouldn’t give up. They played hard and wouldn’t give up. Avon is a very good team and it was a fun basketball game to play.”

Ariana Oorlog led the way for Avon with 19 points. Chesney Nagel added 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. The Pirates outrebounded the Golden Eagles 25-18 but committed 15 turnovers, while MCS had nine.

The Golden Eagles improved to 11-1, while Avon is 7-3.

MCS plays Canistota Monday at Mitchell Christian School, while the Pirates play Andes Central Thursday in Lake Andes.
