Cassidy Graham added 14 points points, while Alexa Van Laecken tallied 10 points and 12 assists for a double-double.

“Overall, it was a good performance for us,” MCS girls’ basketball coach Jackie Van Laecken said. “I think we started out with a little bit of jitters and that is normal. But once the girls settled in and started playing, everything went well.”

The Golden Eagles were outrebounded 31-21 by Howard, but the key to the game was the MCS defense, which forced the Tigers to commit 28 turnovers. Howard was led by Macy Erickson, who scored 13 points and grabbed four rebounds. Mariah Noid added eight points and four steals, while Taylor Noid had seven points.

“In the second half, we really worked hard on the defensive end,” Van Laecken said. “The girls talked and covered each other well and we did a great job of trying to keep them out of the paint.”

MCS (17-4) plays Ethan in the semifinals of the District 8B tournament Thursday at the Corn Palace in Mitchell. Howard ends its season 8-13.
