Marvis Eleanor Scott

Marvis E. Scott, 92, of Mitchell, SD, died Monday, December 09, 2013 at Firesteel Health Care Center. Funeral service will be Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 10:30 AM at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be Tuesday, December 10, 2013 from 6:00 8:00 PM at Will Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service at 7:30 PM. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Church Cemetery in rural Storla, SD.

Marvis Eleanor Scott was born February 14, 1921 at rural Letcher to Andrew and Elma (Runestad) Berg. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 11 at 10:30 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm -8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Will Funeral Chapel.

She grew up on a farm west of Letcher, and graduating from Letcher High School in 1938.

Following graduation, she attended one year of college at Augustana before pursuing a degree at Mabel Woods School of Nursing. She worked as an R.N. for various hospitals and long term care facilities throughout her career.

Marvis married Glen C. Scott on August 29, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church. Gwen, Larry and Dwight were born to this union.

Marvis and Glen continued to farm and raise cattle until 1958, at which time they purchased the Mitchell Sale Barn. In 1963, Marvis and Glen moved their family to a home on Lake Mitchell, giving Marvis a chance to fulfill her desire to live near water. In 1968 a move back to the farm brought Marvis and Glen again to the Storla community.

Marvis spent many hours outdoors, improving the landscape in every way she could. She longed to create park like settings and did so by gardening, planting trees and flowers of every kind. Marvis loved growing roses, feeding birds and entertaining friends and family with her wit and wisdom. After retiring, Marvis enjoyed spending time volunteering for community and church activities.

She is survived by her daughter; Gwen Clausius of Fontana, WI and son Dwight (Ann) Scott of Mitchell; 9 grandchildren; Martin Clausius, Hendersonville, TN, Kristin (Jeff) Johnson, White Fish Bay, WI; Margi (Aaron) Japel , Jackson, WY; Kathryn Fox, San Diego, CA, Joseph (Amity) Fox, Plankinton; Andy Scott, Storla; Christina Scott, Mitchell; Keturah Cummings, Germany; 8 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law Marian Berg, South Lake, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband Glen in 1984; son-in-law Don Clausius in 1996; son Larry in 2000; her parents and a brother Clayton Berg.
