Marvin I. Espedal

Marvin Espedal, 94, Mount Vernon, SD, died Monday, January 20, 2014 at Avera Brady Health and Rehab. Funeral services will be 10:30 am Friday, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 pm Thursday with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at the Bittner Funeral Chapel.

He was born May 27, 1919 in the family home at rural Plankinton to Thor and Clara (Jacobson) Espedal. He graduated from Hopper Consolidated School in 1937. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Mount Vernon and was a lifetime member. On May 29, 1943 he married Elaine Soma. They farmed in Aurora County until retiring in 1985 and they bought a home in Mount Vernon. In 2009 they moved to Countryside Living in Mitchell.

He is survived by his wife Elaine and four children: Irvin (Debra), DeForrest, WI; Darrell, Plankinton; Nancy (Duane) Baker, Fremont, NE and Sharon Young, Mitchell; 10 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph and wife YuVonne, son-in-law, Tom Young, and 2 grandchildren: Dana Espedal and Kari Baker.
