The Huron All Stars took advantage of a slow Marlin boys' varsity team at the end of the opening period.

The All Stars (5-7) scored two goals in the final minute and a half of the first.

"We played a sloppy five minutes in that first period," said Mitchell coach John Lord, whose team lost 3-1 Tuesday at the Mitchell Activities Center. "This has kind of been the Achilles heel all year."

Huron's first-period goals were scored by Nate Tomczak and Andy Reimer -- with the first coming on a power play. After giving up the goals in the first, the Marlins (2-13) controlled the puck for most of the game.

"After that, we came out and dominated offensively," Lord said. "We started winning races and battles to the puck and applied really good offensive pressure, but unfortunately when you don't put three periods together, you lose."

The Marlins outshot Huron 39-33 in the game but were only able to get one score, a third-period goal from Jacob Rice with Cole Koons earning the assist.

"I told the guys, 'I've never seen the puck bounce around the goal so many times without the puck going in,' " Lord said. "We just couldn't get the puck in the net."

Mitchell goalie Weston Gauger made 30 saves, while Huron goalie Parker Hook made 38 saves in the game.

Despite the loss, Lord said his team has been progressing throughout the season.

The Marlins are back in action this weekend as they play against St. Francis, Ontario, Canada, at 7 p.m. Friday in tournament in Duluth, Minn.
