Man shot and killed by Sioux Falls officer ID'd
SIOUX FALLS (AP) — South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has identified a man shot and killed by a police officer in Sioux Falls.
Jackley says 22-year-old Jacob Westberg, of Sioux Falls, died of a gunshot wound Monday. Jackley says the state Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating at the request of Sioux Falls police.
Police say Westberg was suicidal, and was shot and killed after he pointed a rifle at officers outside a Sioux Falls home Monday evening.
Police say at least one gunshot had been fired from the home before officers arrived and another shot was heard once they got to the scene, and that officers unsuccessfully tried to negotiate with Westberg.
The SWAT officer who shot Westberg has not been identified. The officer is on paid leave during the investigation.
