Joseph Churich, 23, was arrested on charges of DUI, his second, on Thursday after he allegedly struck another vehicle, then drove away from the scene, according to Patrol Sgt. Joel Reinesch with the Mitchell Police Division. Churich also was charged with driving while revoked, resisting arrest and obstructing a law enforcement officer, all Class 1 misdemeanors. The maximum penalty for a Class 1 misdemeanor is one year in county jail or a $2,000 fine or both, upon conviction. Hit-and-run charges are pending.

Mitchell Police Officer Kelly Loudenburg said officers were called to the scene of an accident around 9:40 p.m. on Thursday after a moped allegedly struck a vehicle, then drove off.

Becky Handrahan, a 57-year-old from Mitchell, was southbound in a 2007 Pontiac G6 in the 100 block of North Sanborn Boulevard, preparing to make a left turn, when she was struck by Churich, who was traveling behind her.

According to authorities, witnesses saw Churich fall after the collision, then get back on the moped and drive away from the scene. Reinesch said a witness followed Churich and helped officers locate him. Officers stopped Churich near the 1400 block of South Miller Avenue. Churich suffered minor injuries from the accident. He was arrested by Officer Dan Fechner and taken into custody at the Davison County Jail.
