SALEM -- A Madison man died in a car accident west of Salem on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Aaron Hanson said at about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Gerald Kenneth Ottoson, 60, was driving a straight truck hauling fertilizer westbound on 252nd Street out of Salem.

About 1 1/2 miles west of Salem, Hanson said the driver's side front tire blew out, and the vehicle crossed the center line before entering the south ditch. The vehicle went through a barbed wire fence, struck a field approach, struck several trees, then rolled a three-quarter turn before coming to rest on the driver's side of the vehicle.

Hanson said Ottoson was not wearing his seat belt, and suffered fatal injuries in the crash. He was declared dead at the scene. The McCook County Sheriff's Office, McCook County EMS, Salem Fire Department and Highway Patrol responded. Hanson and others remained at the scene for more than three hours, in part to get the truck removed and spilled fertilizer cleaned up.
