Macy Miller sets Class AA scoring record with 49 in Kernel win
SPEARFISH -- Macy Miller broke the Class AA girls' baskeball single-game scoring record Saturday in Spearfish.
The senior guard scored 49 points on 15-of-29 shooting from the field and finished 19-of-21 from the free-throw line in No. 2 Mitchell's 77-66 win over the Spartans. The South Dakota State University commit added 12 rebounds, seven steals and five assists.
“At first I was a little nervous. I didn't want to come out sluggish,” Miller said. “I just came out aggressive and just kept taking it to the basket."
Huron's Ruth Nelson held the previous record with 46 points.
Miller's 49 broke the school record for scoring in a single game for the second time in eight days after scoring 43 in a win over Yankton on Jan. 31. Jenna Hoffman set the Kernel record with 34 points in a single game in 2003.
Miller went to the free-throw line late in the fourth quarter with a chance to hit 50 points after a technical foul was called against the Spearfish coach, but after making her first attempt, she missed the second and finished with 49.
"I really didn't think about it during the game," Miller said, referring to the scoring record. "I just kept trying to get that W for us, and just kept trying to take it to the basket."
Taylor Volesky added 16 points for the Kernels in the win.
Mitchell (15-1) now sits atop Class AA with 44.63 seed points after No. 1 Sioux Falls Washington fell to Sioux Falls O'Gorman on Friday.
The Kernels return to Eastern South Dakota Conference action against Huron Tuesday in Huron. Spearfish (11-3) plays Belle Fourche Thursday in Spearfish.
