Lyla M. Krueger

Funeral services for Lyla M. Krueger, 93, of Chamberlain formerly of Aberdeen will be 1:30 pm Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Pukwana Free Lutheran Church in Pukwana with Pastor Ron Pulscher officiating. Burial will be 11:30 am Friday, February 14 at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Aberdeen. Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm with family present at the Hickey Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.

Lyla Mae was born near Groton, SD on September 6, 1920 to Oran E. and Hilda A. (Larson) Baldry. She graduated from Groton high School in 1938, and later that fall she married the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Krueger. The enjoyed 62 years together before Dick passed in 2000.

Lyla and Dick farmed S.W. of Groton for many years until they moved into Aberdeen in 1964. Lyla worked at Stevenson's dress shop for many years and then later at Bostwick's Department Store. In 1970, Lyla and Dick moved to Havre, MT to help establish the new Sandvig's store. After two years they moved back to "the ranch" west of Belle Fourche, SD where they had many opportunities to exercise their gift of hospitality. In 1977, they returned to Aberdeen to help care for Lyla's aging parents.

As a teenager, she played the piano in her family's band, The Baldry Orchestra. They played for many old time dances in the Groton area.

Lyla was involved in LWML at St. John's Lutheran Church, West Hansen Township and later at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Aberdeen where she held her membership.

As her health decline, Lyla came to live with her daughter and son-in-law in Chamberlain, SD in 2007. She entered Sanford Care Center in November of 2011 where she was lovingly cared for until the time of her death.

She was a much loved "Grammie" and she loved them right back. She was always willing to listen and encourage each of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her children always appreciated her sense of humor, her honesty and fairness and her emulation of always doing the right thing.

Lyla went to be with her Savior on February 7, 2014 at Sanford Care Center in Chamberlain with her daughters holding her hands. Gratefully sharing her life are her two daughters, Roberta (George) Walter of Denver, CO and Kathleen (Terry) Brooks of Chamberlain, SD; daughter-in-law Nancy Krueger of Watertown, SD; eleven grandchildren, Tamra Lorenz (Scott) Gross, Paula Lorenz (Bernie) Gregg, Troy Lorenz, Scott (Darla) Lorenz, Lantry Lorenz, Amy Krueger (Scott) Carlson, Ann Krueger (David) Schmidt, Heidi Krueger (Ray) Bower, Joseph Brooks, Sara Brooks (Kyle) Hammerbeck, and Mitchell (Katie) Brooks; 27 great grandchildren; eight great, great grandchildren; a sister Patricia Booker of Mesa, AZ; 13 nieces and nephews; and grandchildren of the heart Kari Toupal and Tammy Lorenz.

Preceding her in death were her husband, her son David in 2007, her parents, four brothers, Gordon, James, Dennis, and Bud Baldry, son-in-law Glenn Lorenz, and grandson-in-law Timothy Moore.
