Local Lakeview Lawn Bowling green now open 7 nights a week
The Lakeview Lawn Bowling Green is now open to the public with regular hours.
The green, located by the Lakeview Golf Course, is open for public play from 5:30 p.m. until dark seven days a week.
A trainer will be on hand to offer free lessons in the sport and equipment is available as well. Several sizes of bowls are available for players, as are tools to assist people in wheelchairs or those who have difficulty kneeling or other physical limitations.
Sneakers, flip-flops or other shoes that will not harm the green must be worn.
"Everything's provided except the flat-bottomed shoes," said Rod Titze, who has led the effort to revive lawn bowling in Mitchell.
Two groups have formed, one from the Moonlight Bar, which meets most Mondays, and a campers' group that plays on Wednesdays.
Titze, who grew up playing lawn bowling, and his fellow enthusiasts have worked for the past few years to get the sport a foothold once more in Mitchell.
The green here is the only one of its kind in South Dakota. It has eight lanes for play, while a green in Rapid City has just one.
Clinics have been given to Mitchell Christian School students. Church groups and people from LifeQuest, Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Abbott House have also visited the green and rolled the bowls.
Titze said nearly 500 games have been rolled on the green this year.
Local businesses and people have contributed to the effort and the city of Mitchell built and maintains the green. There is also a nonprofit agency called the Lakeview Lawn Bowling Association that has been formed to support the sport.
