Local bus driver recognized for decade of service
MITCHELL -- Herb Uttecht, 78 of Mitchell, has received recognition of retirement award from the South Dakota School Transportation Association for his 10 years of service with Dietrich Bus Service in Mitchell.
Uttecht farmed in the Corsica and Armour area for over 50 years, and worked on the Corsica School Board for 16 years before moving to Mitchell to drive bus for Bill Fergen, manager of the Dietrich Bus Service.
"Herb did a heck of a job for me," Fergen said. "I hope I find more guys like Herb."
Uttecht grew up driving semi-trucks while farming, but never thought he would drive bus. "I told my wife I never, ever would drive bus, but here I am." Uttecht said.
Chasing grandchildren and fishing are the top priorities for his retirement, according to Uttecht.
"I could still work, but I want to get caught up on my fishing." Uttecht, said.
