Lions select Parkston's Reiff with 23rd pick in NFL draft
Parkston native Riley Reiff has been selected with the 23rd pick in the NFL draft by the Detroit Lions.
Reiff, an offensive lineman from the University of Iowa, declined an invitation to attend the draft's opening round Thursday evening in New York. Instead, he was watching the draft on television at his family's home in Parkston.
When the pick was announced, ESPN draft expert Mel Kiper said Reiff's positive attributes include his Iowa pedigree, where head coach Kirk Ferentz is an offensive line guru, according to Kiper.
Former NFL head coach Jon Gruden also praised Reiff on the live ESPN broadcast.
"I think this kid could be a very good right tackle," Gruden said.
Reiff's selection was announced by Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, whom NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell described as a "special guest."
