Linda Young, age 63, of Mitchell, SD died Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Friday January 24, 2014 at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 PM Thursday January 23, 2014 at the Will Funeral Chapel with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Linda Young, daughter of Clarence "Cy" and Alice (Larson) Young, was born September 23, 1950 in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Linda lived in Aberdeen until 1955 at which time she moved with her mother and father to Mitchell, South Dakota. Linda attended Holy Spirit Catholic School through the 8th grade and graduated from Notre Dame High School in Mitchell in 1968. Linda went on to attend the University of South Dakota and ultimately graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education.
She taught Kindergarten and First grade in the Hanson 30-1 school system in Alexandria, South Dakota until 1988. In 1988 she invested in a family owned corporation and was named Secretary/Treasurer of Independent Oil Company. She handled the bookkeeping for Independent Oil Company from 1988 to 2000 wherein she retired due to health issues. Linda was an avid volunteer for Avera Queen of Peace Hospital giving over 1300 hours of her time as well as visiting the elderly and the sick at the nursing homes and hospitals. Linda was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church where she taught CCD in her younger years and during retirement, joined Bible Study groups and was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America. Linda loved politics and was always interested in working at the polls on Election Day.
Lindas hobbies and interests over the years were watching her many nieces and nephews in high school activities where she was an avid fan, collecting dolls, cookbooks and other special collectibles was her passion. She took great care of her mother when she was ill and thus her interests turned to helping the elderly out as best she could. Even in the past two years that she was in either assisted living or the nursing home, she was known for helping out those that were less fortunate than her or assisting the staff.
Linda is survived by her four brothers, Robert E Young and Laurie, Bill Young, Keith R. Young and wife, Kim, Reginald Young and Deb all of Mitchell, SD; and twelve nieces and nephews, Nicole Stahle, Skip Young, Brett Young, Nick Young, Kerri Young, Tatum Mahlen, Kim Young, Tom Young, Tony Young, Mike Young, Amanda Young and Alex Young and nine great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents Cy in 1995 and Alice in 2006; two siblings in infancy, Joyce and Ronald.
