Lillian May Kortan was born on October 4, 1920 to Frank and Mary (Beran) Dolejsi at the family farmstead east of Geddes, SD. Lillian was the youngest of nine children. She attended the one room school house just steps from the farmstead. After 8th grade, she had to leave school to provide full care for her invalid mother for several years. In 1942 Lillian married John Kortan in O'Neill, NE. Shortly thereafter, John entered the U.S. Army and Lillian returned to her family's farm. In 1946, they came back to Geddes and took over farming for Ladislav Turnovec's (John's stepfather) farmstead. Lillian and John had two children: David born in 1946 and Janice born in 1954. Lillian worked hard as a farm wife caring for the farm animals, gardening, cleaning, driving tractor, and did a lot of cooking for family, friends, and farm workers. In 1983, they moved into Geddes and John died in 1987. She loved baking kolaces and made perfect pies, especially apple. She also loved playing cards, getting together with relatives, and going into town for the Saturday night dances. She was a lifelong member of the ZCBJ (Bohemian Fraternal Organization) and the united Methodist Church in Geddes. She remained at home until 2012, when she moved to the Platte Care Center where she died on October 23, 2013 at the age of 93.
She is survived by her son, David (Jan) Kortan of Shoreview, MN and their children, Nicholas and Adam (Victoria), and step-children, Matthew and John (Maureen), daughter, Janice (Guy) Barnett of Yankton, SD, and their children, Nancy (Steve), Sherri (Donavan), Kristy, and Holly, and great-grandchildren, Preston, Lincoln, Levi, Josh, Tamiah, Taryn, Lance, Charlotte, and Susanna.
