LETTER: Stace Nelson true to GOP ideals
To the Editor:
Our country is in deep trouble, and putting the same familiar names into office again and again is a large part of the reason. In too many cases, government has become the family business. While brand loyalty is great for buying laundry soap, it's not a good way of picking people for government jobs, like U.S. Senate. National office holders wield a lot of power and make decisions that greatly affect our lives.
The Republicans always make the mistake of choosing candidates according to whose big name is next -- just ask President Romney, for example. Who needs another glad-handing politician with a nice smile who will fold under pressure like a cheap card table?
Stace Nelson stayed true to Republican ideals, even when Republican heavyweights pressured him to sell out -- and then mocked his fidelity. He was expelled from caucus -- so what? Caucus is a closed meeting of party members, not a legislative function, where dissent is crushed in secret by party leadership. Stace is a clear-eyed public servant who deserves to be called "statesman." In Washington, he will stand tall for all South Dakotans, just like he did in Pierre. Vote for Stace Nelson for Senate.
