LETTER: Only God knows Robertson’s motives

To the Editor:

“Duck Dynasty’s” Phil Robertson’s comments are all over the media. Why Phil Robertson said whatever he did, only God knows his heart. Why others act and speak against him the way they do, God knows their hearts, also.

If Phil Robertson spoke with a heart of condemnation, God will judge that. If others speak against him because they are attempting to justify what the Bible calls sin, God alone will judge that. Our job is not to condemn, but to share the Gospel in love. Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10). God loves you (John 3:16) and wants to spend eternity with you. However, God is holy and can have nothing to do with sin. God did address homosexuality as sin in the 19th chapter of Genesis (destroying Sodom and Gomorrah), Romans 1:24-28 and in 1 Corinthians 6:9 and 10.

Just as a parent needs to correct children (in love) when they do wrong, we all need to be corrected. “All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). The wages of sin is death (spiritual separation from God forever). Without correcting our situation, we have no hope of spending eternity with God. The first thing we need to do is admit we are sinners. Next, we need to repent (to be sorry for our sin that grieves the heart of God). We also need to believe that Jesus died on the cross for our sins (our only hope of spending eternity with God) and accept him as Lord and Savior of your life. That would include being offended by sin and trying to share the gospel of grace (Ephesians 2:8-9) with others.

The easier thing for Phil Robertson (and me) to do would be compromise with sin and not say anything. We are called to “judge righteous judgment” (John 7:24). With that fits Hebrews 12:14: “follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.”

God’s word has so much we need to know.
