LETTER: GOP deserves scrutiny in wake of shutdown
To the Editor:
Most of the national press seems to be blaming the Republican Party for the governmental shutdown. I’m not privy to all the parliamentary moves of the president and the Congress.
But I’m ready to accept the blame from my small corner of the Republican Party. We all should analyze the quote from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas): “If this is the only way to stop the runaway train called the federal government, then we’re willing to try it.”
Recently I was at a town hall meeting with U.S. Congresswoman Kristi Noem. An attendee said, “Maybe the GOP should stop banging their heads against the wall on Obamacare and focus on the biggest problem, balancing the budget.”
The shutdown might deliver a hidden blessing. The American people will see which federal programs and employees they can get along without.
