LETTER: Congrats to amateur baseball teams

Email

To the Editor:

Wow! What a South Dakota Class B Championship Amateur baseball game last Sunday in Sioux Falls.

Alexandria defeated Winner/Colome 4-3 in a dandy. Winner/Colome came into the tournament under the radar with hardly anyone picking it to be in the final (with the possible exception of the players' mothers). The team exceeded all expectations by leading the powerful and talented team from Alexandria until the last of the ninth. It will no longer be said in future state tournaments that the best draw would be to play a West River team. No West River team had ever reached the finals before.

But Alexandria was not ranked No. 1 in the poll all season for nothing. It had a goal to win the state tournament, and the Angels accomplished that feat for their first time. They won in dramatic fashion in a most exciting finish by scoring 3 runs in the last of the ninth. At game's end, there were two caliber champion teams standing on the diamond.

Alexandria was the deserving champion, as it has one of the most talented teams in South Dakota history. Its pitchers could beat the Twins 3 out of 4 games. What a climax to a terrific season for the Angels.

Congratulation to both teams, and also for their individual honors.

Tyson Gau of Alexandria earned MVP honors for the Class B tournament.

Winner/Colome was awarded the team sportsmanship trophy, presented by the tournament umpires

Derek Graesser of Winner/Colome earned the Hustle Award, presented by the Tony Adams family.

Trevor Oswald of Canova was awarded the Class B batting champ plaque.

Rick Weber of Flandreau was the recipient of the Randy Weber Inspirational Award.

It was a successful tournament, and we all look forward to watching Alexandria and Winner/Colome play in the 2014 State Tournament in Mitchell Aug. 6-17.
