LETTER: Bad business to believe EPA lies about ethanol

A practice called “inversion” is used by international oil corporations and others to avoid paying taxes in the United States. They renounce U.S. citizenship to seek out the lowest bidder tax state to call their country. The president calls them unpatriotic. I call them tax traitors. These foreign oil entities are the competitors to our tax-paying, South Dakota corn processing industry. Corn processing is the cornerstone of our job-creating South Dakota economy and No. 1-rated business climate. It is embarrassingly poor business that we allow these tax traitors to financially create two mythical public perceptions. Myths that have severely curtailed projected growth of ethanol production nationally and South Dakota’s corn processing. Foreign oil says it is illegal to fuel standard autos with E-30. Secondly, it says E-30 will ruin standard auto engines. Embarrassingly, our government’s Environmental Protection Agency believes these foreign oil-created myths and parrots them daily.
Yet thousands of pioneering standard auto owners weekly select blender pumps’ popular E-30 to travel millions of trouble-free miles. Also, referencing parts manuals, retired Lake Area Tech Auto Department head Al Kasperson found the engines are identical in flex and standard autos. There are minor computer program modifi cations, etc., to accommodate higher fuel fl ow needed for E-85 and unneeded for E-30. These realities should embarrass the EPA and other ethanol critics.
More extremely poor business: these myths fraudulently hijack at least $200 million annually from South Dakota standard auto owners, assuming we use 400 mg of gasoline annually. Ethanol’s 93 octane premium E-30 is at least 50 cents less than unleaded and 20 cents less than E10. Standard auto owners using E-30 typically report “more power and can’t tell the difference in mpg.”
