Lawn bowling titles won at Trainers Tournament

The 2012 Lakeview Lawn Bowling League season wrapped up Oct. 28, and league founder Rod Titze and his wife Mary were right in the mix for titles.

The Titzes finished first in the pairs division, and Mary Titze finished second to Duke Seiner in the singles competition.

The titles were claimed at the third annual Trainers Tournament, held in chilly conditions at the Lakeview Municipal Golf Course. Champions were determined in singles, pairs and triples.

In the singles event, Seiner defeated Mary Titze 11-7. In pairs, Rod and Mary Titze bested Janis and Wayne Gerlach 11-5. In triples, the title went to Gerald Bultje, Rod Titze and Wayne Gerlach, who defeated Donna Bultje, Janis Gerlach and Mary Titze by the score of 11-7.

The lawn bowling green was used more than 1,600 times during the season, Rod Titze reported, which tops the 1,353 plays in 2011. Some play is still possible as long as weather permits.

"We had bowlers from age 1 up into the 80s that came out to the green to help make our season a success," he said. "There were hundreds of new players and small groups of bowlers. Leagues competing during the season were the LifeQuest League, Campers League, three leagues each from Mitchell Christian School and from John Paul II School, the Trainers League S, Our Home from Parkston, Big Sisters, Big Brothers, a Parks & Rec clinic, Boyd Group, Frank's Group, United Methodist, Trinity Lutheran, First National Bank, the Moonlight Bar and Trainers League T."

Lawn bowling competition was part of the Senior Olympics held in Mitchell in July, with almost 20 lawn bowlers from all around South Dakota. There were "challenge matches" during the year between lawn bowlers from Mitchell vs. Iowa, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Mitchell bowlers won a majority of these challenge matches.

The 2012 fundraisers were a success, Titze said, as the association raised funds to cover the cost of getting benches by the green. The biggest project remaining is to obtain a decent-sized storage building for equipment and other items at the green, he said.
