Lake Andes man arrested for vehicular homicide
A Lake Andes man has been arrested on two counts of vehicular homicide.
Ronald Fischer Jr., 28, voluntarily surrendered himself Tuesday to the Charles Mix County sheriff. A warrant had been issued for his arrest for a fatal crash on July 8 in Pickstown.
The crash killed Dr. Robert Klumb, 46, of Pierre, and Maegen Spindler, 25, of Cazenovia, N.Y. Klumb was the lead research biologist in the Pierre office for the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Cazenovia was working as a fisheries technician assistant for Klumb during the summer.
The Highway Patrol says Fischer had a blood-alcohol content more than twice the legal limit when the vehicle he was driving struck and killed Klumb and Spindler.
Fischer's vehicle allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign at a highway intersection and then traveled into a parking lot, where it hit Klumb and Spindler.
On Tuesday, Charles Mix County Sheriff Randy Thaler arrested Fischer.
Thaler said he put the word out he was looking for Fischer, citing an arrest warrant.
At 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Fischer voluntarily surrendered himself to Thaler at the Charles Mix County Sheriff's Office in Lake Andes.
Fischer is being held on $200,000 cash bond.
