L. Dean Ferguson

Dean Ferguson, 79, died at home in De Smet on June 10, 2014. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15 from 5-7 p.m. at Osthus Funeral Home in De Smet. Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 16 at 10:30 a.m. at the American Lutheran Church in De Smet.

Dean was born October 16, 1934 to Ruby and Truman Ferguson. Dean grew up in the Manchester/De Smet area in South Dakota. He worked on the farm with his parents until November 8, 1954 when he married Betty Kieffer in a small ceremony at Carthage, SD. They moved to California in 1964 and shared their lives with three daughters. Dean retired in 1996 after thirty-two years as a machinist foreman with Parker-Hannifin Incorporated. They then returned to De Smet, SD.

Dean enjoyed family time, traveling, square dance calling, 4-wheeling, fishing, and much more. His two miniature chihuahua, Mitzy and Annie, were also among his many enjoyments.

He is survived by his wife, Betty, of De Smet; his three daughters, Kathy (Dan) Parsley of Chino, CA, Susan Greeley of Miles City, MT, and Ann Kerns of Walton, KY; his brother, Vernon (Pat), of De Smet; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; plus two new arrivals due this year.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Lyle, and his son-in-law, David Thomas.
